Feed-Back of Volunteers

The Chhahari Group Nepal set me up with a great host family in Kathmandu and a volunteer placement in Kanti Childrens Hospital. The Group was readily available when I had questions during my trip preparation and provided a nice trip to Dakshinkali Temple while I was in Kathmandu. It was overall a great experience to volunteer in Nepal with the help of The Chhahari Group.

Nikki Hoffman -Canada
(Medical Intern-
Kanti Hospital)

I spend 2 weeks volunteering with the Chhahari Group doing photo-journalizm. This was an exciting time working with Rajeesh from the local paper Rising Nepal. I was able to see many different cultures in the Kathmandu area as well as learn more about taking meaningful pictures. Rajeesh was an excellant teacher on what subjects to take pictures of and making me think of how people might view the pictures. This was very helpful in learning what newspapers etc are looking for in story's.

I spent time in Kathmandu during which the King of Nepal was still in control of the government after removing his government back in Feb . Of course the consular sheets warned against going to Nepal because of the uprisings and the Maoist terrorist problems. I however found Nepal an extremely safe place to travel. The people are wonderful and very friendly. I really enjoyed the host family I stayed with. They were very nice and friendly and they welcomed me as part of their family. Ambika the mother, is the best cook in Nepal. Her food was absolutely wonderful!!! So those of you coming to volunteer ask to stay there!!! More...

Thankas
Thanka, one of the most popular manufacturer and wholeseller of original & genuine thanks (religious scroll paintings) based on Tibetan Buddism, also we manufacture Nepali and Newari style.

What is THANKA ?
The THANKA or 'scroll-painting' is perhaps the most typical religious and artistic utterance of the Tibetan Buddhism. The THANKA is to the Lamaism; an artistic utterance of a deep religious experience, submitted to strict iconographical conditions concerning depiction, color, dimensions, proportions, etc...

THANKA's are predominantly objects with meditational meanings. The portrayed subjects are very divergent, from historical characters, through pure imaginary creatures to strict geometrical forms, the mandala's. These are the ultimate means of meditation because they represent the cosmos. These Mandala's also return in architecture (for example the giant stupa of Bodnath in Nepal ). THANKA's represent the feelings and ideas that are hidden deep inside each of us. We can conclude this from the fact that the artist only starts to paint when he is mentally prepared (fasting and meditation). The work itself may take several months, depending on the size and subject.  more...

Carpet of Nepal

Carpet manufacturing has been the traditional business of the villages in the northern mountainous belt of Nepal. But commercial carpet manufacturing began in Nepal along with the exodus of Tibetan refugees in Nepal, in 1959. Though Nepalese were weaving carpets for generations, Europeans through Swiss association for technical Assistance (SATA) contributed in the development of the carpet industry in Nepal through financial and technical support to the Tibetan refugees, In the beginning it was started as a source of living for the Tibetan refugees and the products were just the items for tourist consumption. Gradually, it began to attract a consumer adored initiated, in 1964. From the first commercial shipment to Europe, particularly Switzerland. Since then, it has transformed into a more value added, labor intensive commodity and remains the most important export product in Nepal by abysmal effort entrepreneurs with international vision.  more...

Nepali Handmade Paper Craft Products

The production process of a hand made paper starts from cooking the dried bark of "Lokta" or Daphne Papyracea with ash or caustic soda solution. The soften bark received after boiling is taken out and washed with clean water to remove impurities and then cut into small pieces with sickle.

The small pieces of bark once again cooked with the required proportion of water. After cooking, the soft bark is cleaned with water then kept on a plane and flat stone for beating with wooden hammer to turn into fine pulp. After beating the pulp is mixed with required amount of water and stirred with wooden ladle to form a homogenous emulsion of pulp. Then the potful of pulp-measuring tool is put into the frame which is being floated in the pond. As soon as the pulp is put over the frame, the frame is gently shaken to spread pulp evently over the frame. The frame is then taken out from the pond and the frame with the layer of the pulp (wet sheet of paper) is taken away for drying in the sunlight. more...

Tea

Different Kinds of Tea There are about three thousand variation of tea depending upon its plantation, genetic "parentage", processing, blending etc But all tea comes from one plant i.e Camellia sinensis (This plant is a bush but if allowed to grow wild, it can reach the height of about thirty feet.) In general the tea can be categorized into three main categories i.e green, black, and oolong. There are, of course, many different varieties within these three main categories. The major differences between them are a result of the different processing methods they undergo. Black teas undergo several hours of oxidation (Fermentation), oolongs receive less oxidation or are semi-fermented, and green teas are not oxidized at all.  more...
